A long time ago, Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, fought off fiends for the safety of the locals. Since then, on the tenth day of the lunar month in the Tibetan calendar (his birthday), Ladakhs starkscape gets a colourful makeover courtesy Hemis Festival, celebrated at Hemis gompa, the largest Buddhist monastery of Ladakh.
